Visual Note-Taking 101 from SXSW 2010

March 19, 2011 Leave a comment

This is a fun video about visual note-taking. This is something I have always wanted to learn to do. I think I’ll give it a go after I come in from hunting for seashells.

EDIT: It occurs to me that I didn’t attribute where I found this.  I can;t find it.  My apologies to the great blogger who posted it originally.

School Fundraiser: Always Be Closing

February 23, 2011 Leave a comment

Today was the kickoff of our annual fundraiser. We did the fire up assembly, and then I spent some time in class explaining how to actually fill out the paperwork. Unfortunately, none of my coworkers have seen Glengarry Glen Ross (although I told them to go home and YouTube the Alex Baldwin scene. Don’t watch it at work, it’s not appropriate) so my Always Be Closing poster I placed behind my desk didn’t register. Of course, I didn’t talk about Always Be Closing in class, it’s a joke just for me. Just in case you’re wondering, Always Be Closing refers to making sales, nothing more.

Also if you have ever seen the Everybody Loves Raymond episode where Ray gets into the fight with the woman over girl scout cookies, the Always Be Closing will be much funnier if you watch the Baldwin clip.

The First Day or “Why What We Get to Do is Awesome.”

August 30, 2010 1 comment

Today was the first day for my 6th Graders. I love the first day. So much to do, and it feels like so little time. Of course we do the tours (although I am going to do mine tomorrow, as the students got a mini tour of the places they will be visiting during their initial class visits) and the get to know you introductions, but it’s the little things that always make first days special.

For example, I walked outside at the tail end of lunch and clusters of students started to gravitate towards me. I was surprised until I realized that they thought they had to line up behind me. And the lockers! Oh the new lockers! I gave way more time to locker practice this year, and I am pretty sure that the students really benefitted. I still have a few kids who are really frustrated, but I know they will be champs in no time.

We went over some rules and did basic introductions. Tomorrow will be more of a teambuilding day because I didn’t do enough of that last year. My class last year was a great group, but I think that they could have been even better even earlier if they had more teambuilding early. I will do some basic “Find Someone Who” and group questions, but one of my favorite parts are survival scenarios (what would you bring) type activities where the group has to work together to come up with the best grouping. I have 2 activities, with process questions between them. At the end of the day the class will create a “Class Constitution” for their own conduct. (Files will be posted later. I’m sitting out back enjoying the evening and my flash drive is inside).

I can’t help but thing that what we do is awesome. I hope that your year gets off to a great start and you find things thathave you feeling the same way I am right now.
